Polymyxin B and Trimethoprim are used to treat bacterial infections (such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis) of the eye. Polytrim Ophthalmic contains 2 antibiotics. Polytrim Opth works by killing the bacteria. Trimethoprim works by stopping the growth of the bacteria. Polymyxin B Sulfate Trimethoprim dosage treats only bacterial eye infections. Polymyxin b Trimethoprim eye drops will not work for other types of eye infections. Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

How to use

  • To apply eye drops, wash your hands first.
  • To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface.
  • Use in the eyes only.
  • Do not swallow or inject.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while you are using Polymyxin B and Trimethoprim.
  • Sterilize contact lenses according to the manufacturer’s directions, and check with your doctor before you begin using them again.
  • Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch.
  • Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the pouch as directed by your doctor.
  • Look downward, gently close your eyes, and place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose).
  • Apply gentle pressure for 1 to 2 minutes before opening your eyes.
  • Try not to blink or rub your eye. Repeat these steps if your dose is for more than one drop.

If directed to use Polymyxin b Trimethoprim eye drops in both eyes, repeat these steps for your other eye. Wait several minutes for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery. Do not rinse the dropper. Replace the dropper cap after each use.

Dosage and treatment

Polymyxin B Sulfate Trimethoprim dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may direct you to use Polytrim Ophthalmic more often at first, then use it less frequently as the infection improves. Follow your doctor’s directions carefully.

Tell your doctor if you are using other eye products (such as drops, ointments, artificial tears). Some ingredients in these products may interact with Polytrim Ophthalmic and prevent it from working. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you can use these eye products while using Polymyxin B Sulfate Trimethoprim dosage and how long to wait before applying the other products. Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the drops to enter the eye.

Use Polymyxin B and Trimethoprim regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use Polymyxin B Sulfate Trimethoprim dosage at the same time each day. Continue using it for the full time prescribed, usually 7 to 10 days. Stopping Polytrim Opth too soon may allow the bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a return of the infection.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Side effects

Temporary eye-stinging/burning/redness/itchiness or temporary blurred vision may occur. If any of Polymyxin B and Trimethoprim these effects persist or worsen or if increased pain/swelling occurs, stop using this medication and tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Polymyxin b Trimethoprim eye drops because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using Polytrim Ophthalmic do not have serious side effects.

The use of Polymyxin B and Trimethoprim for prolonged or repeated periods may result in other types of eye infections, including fungal infections. Contact your doctor if you notice new eye symptoms (such as pain, swelling, thick discharge, or pus).

A very serious allergic reaction to Polytrim Ophthalmic is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Before using Polymyxin b Trimethoprim eye drops, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.
  • Polytrim Opth may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using Polymyxin b Trimethoprim eye drops, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: contact lens use.

After you apply Polymyxin B Sulfate Trimethoprim dosage, your vision may become temporarily blurred. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

During pregnancy, Polytrim Opth should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown if Polytrim Opth passes into breast milk when used in the eye. It is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Storage

Store at room temperature. Different brands of this medication have different storage needs. Check the product package for instructions on how to store your brand, or ask your pharmacist. Do not freeze. Keep all medications away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Drug interactions

The effects of some drugs can change if you take other drugs or herbal products at the same time. This can increase your risk for serious side effects or may cause your medications not to work correctly. These drug interactions are possible but do not always occur. Your doctor or pharmacist can often prevent or manage interactions by changing how you use your medications or by close monitoring.
