What is Clobetasol Propionate?

What is Clobetasol Propionate? Clobetasol steroid is used in adults to treat a variety of skin conditions (such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis). Clobetasol Propionate topical solution reduces the swelling, itching, and redness that can occur in these types of conditions. Moreover, Clobetasol eczema is a very strong (super-high-potency) corticosteroid. Clobetasol Propionate side effect can be based on your medical condition.

Clobetasol eczema is not recommended for use in children younger than 18 years of age due to an increased risk of side effects. Ask the doctor or pharmacist for details.

How to use

Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using clobetasol lotion and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions regarding what is Clobetasol Propionate? consult your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Use Clobetasol steroid on the skin only.
  • However, do not use it on the face, groin, or underarms unless directed to do so by your doctor.
  • Wash and dry your hands before applying.
  • Clean and dry the affected area.
  • Apply a thin film of the Clobetasol eczema to the affected area and gently rub in.
  • Usually 2 times daily or as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not bandage, wrap or cover the area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

After applying the Clobetasol Propionate topical solution, wash your hands, unless you are using this medication to treat the hands. When applying this medication near the eyes, avoid getting it in the eyes because this may worsen or cause glaucoma. Also, avoid getting the medication in your nose or mouth. If you get the medication in your eyes, nose, or mouth, rinse with plenty of water.

Do not apply more than 50 grams (50 milliliters or 1.75 ounces) in a given week unless directed by your doctor. Doing so increases the risk of serious side effects.

Use Clobetasol steroid only for the condition prescribed. Do not use it for longer than 4 weeks unless directed by your doctor. If no improvement occurs in 2 weeks of treatment with clobetasol, or if your condition worsens, stop using Clobetasol Propionate topical solution and inform your doctor.

Side effects

  • Burning
  • stinging
  • itching
  • irritation
  • dryness
  • redness

If any of these Clobetasol Propionate side effect persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Clobetasol steroid because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious Clobetasol Propionate side effect.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious Clobetasol Propionate side effect occur: stretch marks (striae), skin thinning/discoloration, excessive hair growth, acne, hair bumps (folliculitis).

Skin infections can become worse when using this medication. Notify your doctor if redness, swelling, or irritation does not improve.

Rarely, it is possible this medication will be absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream. This can lead to side effects of too much corticosteroid. These side effects are more likely in children, and in people who use this medication for a long time or over large areas of the skin. Tell your doctor right away if any of the following Clobetasol Propionate side effect occur:

  • unusual/extreme tiredness
  • weight loss
  • headache
  • swelling ankles/feet
  • increased thirst/urination
  • vision problems

A very serious allergic reaction to Clobetasol eczema is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.

Warnings & Precautions

  1. Before using Clobetasol steroid, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it.
  2. Before using Clobetasol Propionate topical solution, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history.
  3. Do not use if there is an infection or sore in the area to be treated.
  4. Before having surgery or emergency treatment, or if you get a serious illness/injury, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication

Though it is unlikely, Clobetasol eczema may temporarily slow down a child’s growth if used for a long time. See the doctor regularly so your child’s height can be checked.

Clobetasol Propionate topical solution should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk when applied to the skin. Similar medications pass into breast milk when taken by mouth. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Avoid freezing. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Drug interactions

Your healthcare professional (such as your doctor or pharmacist) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially: oral corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone), other topical corticosteroids (e.g., hydrocortisone), drugs that suppress the immune system (e.g., cyclosporine).
